In a groundbreaking announcement from the Oval Office, former President Donald Trump has unveiled a new and expensive pathway to U.S. citizenship—a $5 million “Gold Card.” This initiative, according to Trump, is designed to attract wealthy individuals who can contribute significantly to the American economy.
A Premium Alternative to the Green Card
Trump described the Gold Card as a step above the traditional Green Card, offering permanent resident privileges while also serving as a direct route to citizenship. “We’re going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million, and that’s going to give you Green Card privileges, plus it’s going to be a route to citizenship,” he stated. He emphasized that the Gold Card would cater to high-net-worth individuals, branding it as a more sophisticated immigration option.
Replacing the EB-5 Investor Program
The administration also announced plans to terminate the existing EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program, which has long been a pathway for foreign investors to gain permanent residence by investing in U.S. businesses and creating jobs. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick criticized the EB-5 program, calling it a system filled with “nonsense, make-believe, and fraud.” According to Lutnick, the Trump Gold Card is a more legitimate and financially beneficial alternative, as it directly channels investor funds into reducing the national deficit.
A Boost for the U.S. Economy?
Trump believes that the Gold Card program will attract “very high-level people” who will create jobs and generate significant tax revenue. “You’re getting big taxpayers, big job producers, and we’ll be able to sell maybe a million of these cards, maybe more than that,” he predicted.
Ethical Concerns and Past Controversies
However, the introduction of the Gold Card has already sparked controversy. Critics recall a previous scandal involving Jared Kushner’s family, who were accused of leveraging the EB-5 program to attract Chinese investors to their real estate ventures. Ethics watchdogs labeled the practice as “corruption, pure and simple.”
Tougher Immigration Policies Under Trump
The announcement comes amid a broader crackdown on immigration under Trump’s leadership. His administration has taken a hard stance, including issuing an executive order to end birthright citizenship. However, a recent appeals court ruling rejected an attempt to pause a lower court’s decision blocking the executive order.
As the Trump administration continues to reshape U.S. immigration policy, the introduction of the $5 million Gold Card raises significant questions about access to citizenship, economic benefits, and ethical implications. Whether the program will gain traction or face legal challenges remains to be seen.
